#4 Migrate Contacts and Calendar to Fairphone

It’s been a while since the last post in the series “Freiheit nehmen”. I was busy with working (Mobile Banking stuff) and reading (Andreas Huyssen : Present Pasts – Urban Palimpsets and the politics of memory). Moreover, I started to look into the Open Source Video platform Kaltura and blogged about it here. One word: Frustration. Mixed concentrations of it. Since I messed up the configuration, I wanted to restart the VM where Kaltura is installed. Unfortunately, I forgot the password that encrypts the VM. Now I have to start from scratch with a new VM.

That’s why I move on to another construction site. Migrating from Samsung S2 to Fairphone. There are problems at multiple levels:

At a high level: I am carrying around two devices every day. It’s not a big tragedy during work, since I am working everyday with multiple smartphones. But for personal use this must really change.
My contacts are not imported to Fairphone yet.
My calendar syncronization got reverted, for whatever reason. (Maybe it requires the sync server to be up and running all the time.)

Let’s tackle it, in the end it was quite easy. I will share my knowledge. Plus bonus material: a journey through the data jungle of a device that I have used since 3 years

Samsung S2 – Creaate a Full Backup

My Samsung S2 went into a bootloop and I was about to lose all my data stored there.
Fortunately, this is a common problem. And I found help in forums and blogs.
Essentially, the steps are:
- Insert an SD-Card
- Install PhilZ Recovery Root Kernel
- Make a Backup of the System and store it on the SD-Card
- Copy the Backup to your PC
Do a factory reset and reboot
Side-effect: The device is now rooted. I have not figured out a way to disable root again other than removing PhilZ recovery and flashing the original kernel.

Extracat the Backup

PhilZ recovery backup has multiple tar files and some are split into multiple parts:

cache.ext4.tar + cache.ext4.tar.a
data.ext4.tar + data.ext4.tar.a + data.ext4.tar.b
preload.ext4.tar + preload.ext4.tar.a
system.ext4.tar + system.ext4.tar.a

The data.ext4.* files are of our interest here. I remember having problems extracing the multi-part tar.
My .bash_history logged this, maybe it helps you:

In the end, I have a data directory that contains all the data that are supposed to be private to the application, according to the Android developer guide -> Internal Storage.

This should make Application developers aware that your users, if they have a rooted device, can easily read out all the files that you store using code like this:

FileOutputStream fos = openFileOutput(FILENAME, Context.MODE_PRIVATE)

Now let’s solve our calendar / contact problems.

Transfer Calendar to Fairphone

That’s easy:

adb push ./data/data/com.android.providers.calendar/databases/calendar.db /data/data/com.android.providers.calendar/databases/calendar.db

Transfer Contacts to Fairphone

There are two options:

Option 1: You have your contacts already in your old phone
Just export it as vcf file, transfer the file to the Fairphone and tap on it to import it.

Option 2: You only have a backup of the contacts.
Simply pushing the contacts2.db and the profile.db to the Fairphone does not work. It makes the Fairphone crash infinitely (“acore process stopped working”). If you try this out and you are stuck, only deleting all files in the /com.android.providers.contacts/databases directory made the system happy again.

You also cannot conntect to contact2.db by using sqlite3 and execut a query like this: SELECT name, number FROM view_v1_phones. Or at least I got an error:

Error: no such function: _PHONE_NUMBER_STRIPPED_REVERSED.

This has been discussed at multiple places (e.g. here) with no fix.

The solution is similar to the first option. Convert the contacts2.db into a vcf file using a handy tool called dump-contacts2db written by damiencourousse:

Then, open your favorite file manager on the Fairphone (e.g. com.mediatek.filemanager), view your SDCard and tap on contacts2.vcf. You will get a popup saying the vcf will be imported immediately. Wait a few seconds and go to the “People” or “Phone” app. I was irritated because the list of contacts in the “Phone” app did not show all my contacts. The full list of contacts is available in the “People” app, which has also an import/export functionality for backups.

Browsing through the data of my phone

After being on the safe side with all a typical phone should provide (contacts, calendar), I had a look at the wealth of files that my apps were creating over the last years. Here is just an excerpt of just a few:

One thing that I was not aware is how the clipboard behaves: Apparently, whenever you copy some text or images into the Android clipboard, it gets stored in the /data/clipboard directory for a while:

The clip files contain the text that was stored in the clipboard.

I read that this persistent storage of clipboard data happens only in Samsung devices, not in phones that have plain Android installed.

Bericht von der Budapest Pride aus informatischer Perspektive

Letztes Wochenende, genauer gesagt am 6. Juli 2013, hat die Budapest Pride stattgefunden – grob heruntergebrochen in etwa das was die Regenbogenparade in Wien ist / mal war / sein sollte / … Ein gravierender Unterschied zur Wiener Regenbogenparade ist aber, dass die Budapest Pride seit Jahren von Faschist*innen, Nazis und anderen Rechtsextremen angegriffen, teils verunmöglicht wird. Schon bei der Anreise kommt uns eine beängstigende Gruppe der Neuen Ungarischen Garde entgegen, dem paramilitärischen Arm der rechtsextremen Partei Jobbik. Daher wird die Budapest Pride seit ein paar Jahren auch durch die Polizei komplett abgeriegelt von der Öffentlichkeit. Um so erstaunlicher wie groß (~10.000 Personen) die Pride dann war und wer alles da war…

Mit dabei war nämlich auch ein ganzer Lastwagen unter dem Motto “Yeah, we’re open!” voll mit LED-Wänden und Special Effects – gesponstert von Google, Prezi und einer weiteren Firma, die nicht direkt im IT-Bereich angesiedelt ist. Da und dort konnte mensch auch Leute in Google- oder Prezi-T-Shirts herumlaufen sehen. Bei Prezi warens so viele, dass sie fast einen eigenen kleinen Demoblock bilden konnten. Spannend daran sind zumindest 2 Punkte:

Im Gegensatz zur Wiener Regenbogenparade ist die Budapest Pride großteils (noch?) nicht kommerzialisert, es fühlt sich alles wie eine “richtige Demo” an. Umsomehr fällt es dann auf wenn doch irgendwelche Unternehmen als solche präsent sind. Und noch erstaunlicher ists, wenn das dann so IT-Unternehmen wie Google und Prezi sind und nicht irgendwelche Party-Lokalitäten oder Queere-Lifestyle-Schuppen. Insbesondere der Slogan “Yeah, we’re open” passt ja inhaltlich und teils technisch auch zu Google und Prezi. Im Grunde nur konsequent, wenn sie da auch personell nachziehen. Außerdem wird hier aber auch nach klarer Marktlogik erkannt, dass eine Diversifizierung des Personals auch Innovationspotential in sich birgt. Dafür kann dann auch mal politisch ein Zeichen gesetzt werden.
Verwunderlich oder gerade eben nicht: Google pflegt hier ein offenes und “diversity friendly” Image, das an anderer Stelle immer wieder bröckelt. So lässt Google in dessen App Store sogenannte ‘gay cure’ Apps zu, die vermeintlich helfen sollen Homosexualität zu “heilen”. Bereits seit längerem gibt es Kampagnen dagegen, unter anderem von allout.org [1], aber Google (genauso wie Apple im Übrigen auch) stellt bislang auf stur, was beim Anblick des Google-Trucks auf der Budapest Pride besonders bitter aufstößt. Tja, hier könnte vielleicht auch wieder der alte Spruch applikabel sein: “Wer völlig offen ist, ist nicht ganz dicht!” Wer Menschen nicht ausschließt, die anderen ihre Daseinsberechtigung (so wie sie sind) absprechen, produziert automatisch Ausschlüsse gerade gegenüber jenen, die ohnehin von gesellschaftlicher Repression betroffen sind. Ist das im Fall von Google halt noch recht einfach auf eine Marktlogik zurückzuführen (was es auch nicht besser macht) ist das im Fall von Free/Libre & Open Source Software und den ganzen innovativen Hacker- & Maker-Communities (ja, die sind nach wie vor fast ausschließlich männlich geprägt) leider tatsächlich auf die Verweigerung privilegierter Menschen zurückzuführen, sich mit ihren eigenen Privilegien und den Machtstrukturen in unseren Communities auseinanderzusetzen.

Nicht völlig abgeschirmt – ein paar (pro)queere Anwohner*innen jubeln der Demo zu

Da das hier aber nur mal zum ersten Nachdenken anregen soll und es ja um nen Bericht von der Budapest Pride ging belassen wir es erstmal dabei. Ein spannender Artikel der zum einen nochmal das Thema Offenheit in technisch interessierten Communities, insbesondere Hacker*innenkreisen weiterführt und auch Ausblick auf mögliche integrative Strategien gibt wurde diesen April von Sophie Toupin veröffentlicht [2]. Aber auch in unserem Blog gabs dazu in verschiedenen Varianten schon mal was zu lesen [3] [4] [5].

Für die Informatik in Wien bleiben also auch weiterhin kritische, (pro-)feministische Räume zu fordern, sowohl materiell im Sinne von Ressourcen die zur Verfügung gestellt werden, als auch inhaltlich im Sinne von (Lehr)Veranstaltungen und Informatik-Curricula/-Lehrpläne, die auch derartige gesellschaftliche Verhältnisse in den Blick nehmen. Wie diesbezüglich die Situation in Ungarn selbst aussieht wär auch noch ein spannendes Thema das zu ergründen wäre.

Wo letztes Jahr die Demo wegen Faschos umdrehen musste wurden heuer unzählige Luftballone mit Botschaften losgelassen.

Um den Artikel abzurunden bleibt zur Budapest Pride selbst dann nur noch festzuhalten dass diese eigentlich ganz angenehm entspannt und ohne gröbere Zwischenfälle verlief. Allerdings wurden bereits mehrere Attacken durch Nazis und Faschist*innen auf Pride-Besucher*innen gemeldet, abseits der Demo oder am Weg von oder zur Pride. Selbst die Intergroup on LGBT Rights des Europäischen Parlaments bestätigt hier gravierende Mängel, wenn auch alles in allem recht schöngefärbt [6]. So kann die Tatsache, dass die ganze Parade großflächig von der Außenwelt abgeriegelt wurde durchaus auch anders gelesen werden als nur “Die Polizei wollte halt die Paradenteilnehmer*innen” schützen. Klar war das eine ihrer Aufgaben, aber einer konservativen, rechten Regierung ist es sicherlich auch recht, wenn hier keine großen Wellen geschlagen werden. Und das spektakuläre Polizeigeleit bis zur Stadtgrenze, nachdem wir bei der Abschlusskundgebung wieder in unseren Bus [7] gestiegen sind könnte – ebenso wie das Winken eines der vorbeifahrenden Polizist*innen – genauso als freundlicher Rauswurf von uns perversen Ganov*innen gedeutet werden. Postapokalypse JETZT!

Wir schreiben das Zeitalter der Postapokalypse. Dies sind die Abenteuer des neuen /bin Kollektivs, das sich nach der letzten ÖH-Wahl durch die unendlichen Engen der sterilen Gebäude, Brandschutzverordnungen, fixierten Semesterplänen und intransparenten Meetings neu formiert, um spannende Projekte zu entdecken. Es schrammt dabei an Dystopien vorbei, die selbst unsere tapfere Mafalda erschaudern.

Dies ist eine Stellungnahme und ein Ausblick. Wie ihr vielleicht mitbekommen habt, wurde die /bin bei der ÖH Wahl gewissermaßen abgewählt. Ab heute (1. Juli 2013) werden nur mehr zwei der 5 Mandatar*innen in der Studienvertretung Informatik aus der /bin kommen. Wie die anderen drei agieren werden, und inwieweit sich da auch “ganz normale Inforatikstudis” und sonstwie Interessierte einbringen können werden, wird sich zeigen. Zwei der drei Kandidat*innen, die anscheinend nicht (mehr) nach offenen, inklusiven und basisdemokratischen Prinzipien arbeiten wollen sind Mariana Melinte und Stephanie Urbanczyk. Beide waren bislang mehr oder weniger in der /bin aktiv und waren bereits über die letzten 2 Jahre Mandatarinnen in der Studienvertretung bzw. der Fakultätsvertretung.

Der Vertrauensvorschuss, den viele in der /bin Mimi und Steffi gegeben haben, wurde enttäuscht. Wissen über die Prozesse in der Hochschulpolitik, über Budgetverwaltung, etc wurden in Workshops und Gesprächen der /bin aufgebaut. Wir haben Zeit investiert, und anstatt dass sich Mimi und Steffi (gern auch kritisch) einbringen, möchten sie nun mit Hong ihr eigenes Ding machen, und denken sie können es nun besser machen. Wir werden sehen, was passiert und inwieweit – abgesehen von den gewählten StudienvertreterInnen – noch andere Leute die Möglichkeit haben, sich einzubringen, doch wir sind auf Basis unserer Erfahrungen mit Mimi und Steffi eher skeptisch.

Trotzdem sind wir daran interessiert, dass Studienvertretung passiert. Einigen in der /bin ist es wichtig, in Gremien zum Beispiel zur Gestaltung des Studienplans präsent zu sein und dort Themen einzubringen, die in offenen Arbeitsgruppentreffen diskutiert wurden. Wir möchten das Vorgehen und die Transparenz der neuen Studienvertretung beobachten und auch einfordern.

Wir wollen euch überzeugen, wie wichtig offene (Arbeits)gruppen für die Fähigkeit junger Menschen sind, sich selbst zu organisieren und gestaltend auf Vorgaben einzuwirken. Die /bin wollte stets ein Ort sein, in dem wir Vorgaben – trotz vorgesetzter Deadlines, Studieninhalte, Prüfungsstress, Richtlinien – nicht um jeden Preis stehen lassen. Es gehört zum akademischen Lernprozess auf Distanz zu Vorgaben zu gehen, und sie ggf. in Frage zu stellen. Wie geht mensch damit um? Wer macht eigentlich die Vorgaben? Was waren die Überlegungen, diese Vorgaben zu setzen? Was machen Vorgaben mit den Menschen, die ihnen ausgesetzt sind?

Das sind Fragen, die nicht notwendigerweise für die /bin sprechen – mensch kanns auch anders und neu angehen, vielleicht ist das sogar erfrischend. ABER: Wir sind überzeugt:

Die Mitgestaltung von Studienbedingungen soll so barrierefrei wie möglich sein.
Ein Studium ist keine bedingungslose Unterwerfung unter etablierte Mehrheiten, auch wenn stabile Mehrheiten zur Orientierung sinnvoll sein können.
Und konkret für das Informatikstudium: Neben Programmierkenntnissen, Bestimmung algorithmischer Komplexität, Modellierung von Modellen oder Softwareentwicklungsmethoden und Spieltheorie gehören auch Fragen wie zum Beispiel folgende dazu: Was machen technische Vorgaben mit Menschen? Was machen Menschen mit Technik? Was tun, wenn Überwachungssoftware außer Kontrolle gerät? Wenn die Komplexität unserer technischen Systeme unsere Beurteilungsfähigkeit übersteigt? Günther Anders’ Satz aus dem Buch “Zerstörung unserer Zukunft” der nach Fukushima oft auf Atomkraftwerke bezogen wurde, passt auch auf globale Computer- oder Finanznetzwerke: „Wie verstörte Saurier lungern wir inmitten unserer Geräte herum“. Unsere”Werkzeuge” übersteigen das konkrete Verständnis und erhalten gewissermaßen ein Eigenleben, auf das wir nicht verzichten wollen, das uns andererseits aber ebenso (ver)formt. Kurz gesagt: Es gehört zu unserem Verständnis eines professionellen Informatikstudiums, uns mit Technikfolgen auf Menschen zu beschäftigen.

In diesem Sinne möchte die /bin also arbeiten. Ihr fragt euch vielleicht: Wie solls nun weitergehen? Tja, genau das versuchen wir auch rauszufinden. Jedenfalls wollen wir inhaltlich weiterarbeiten und werden uns weiterhin treffen. Inwieweit wir auch noch Studienvertretungs-Arbeit machen bzw. unterstützen können, hängt davon ab wie Mimi, Steffi und Hong agieren werden, und ob ihr, die ihr das lest, uns bei diesen postapokalyptischen Abenteuern unterstützt. Bereits zweimal gab es auch in Wien ein Queer Geeks Treffen, inspiriert von den monatlichen Zusammentreffen Berliner Queer Geeks and Naughty Nerds. Nun ist in Wien auch das dritte Queer Geeks Treffen angesagt, und zwar am Freitag, 17. Mai 2013 ab 20 Uhr im Marea Alta in der Gumpendorferstraße 28. Alle queeren Nerds und Geeks als auch deren Freund*innen (auch wenn nicht ganz so queer) sind herzlich eingeladen.

Generell könnt ihr über zukünftige Queer Geeks Treffen in Wien auf http://queergeeks.at informiert bleiben. Wie es aussieht wirds jetzt regelmäßiger. Teilmengen der /bin sind auch dort zu treffen

Auch heuer gibt es wieder eine Frauen*-Frühlings-Uni, die diesmal in Burgenland von 18. bis 21. April 2013 stattfindet. Damit auch diesmal das Programm wieder ein umfangreiches und spannendes wird, linken wir hier zum Call for Papers bzw. Call for Action der FFU 2013.

Zeit zum Einreichen der Vorschläge ist bis 31. Jänner 2013. Es soll auch nach Möglichkeit Honorare geben für jene, die bei der FFU auch aktiv was vorbereiten.

About half a year ago, I put together some notes on “Sexism on the web and in hacker spaces“, because there have been a lot of ugly things going on over the summer which urged me to voice some concerns and point to ongoing struggles (usually of women) against sexist behaviour.

Sadly, once again I have to take this issue up following some major incidents in hacker communities. Recently the 29c3 took place in Hamburg – the major annual hacker conference in the German speaking regions. And happily the incidents of last summer led the organisers to device an explicit anti-harassment policy for the conference. Of course nobody would have thought that this alone will hold back sexist jerks from harassing and insulting other people. But what came out in the end is more disappointing than I have imagined. A good summary of all the sexist crap that happend and was often tolerated is provided by Valerie Aurora at the Ada Initiative blog: Ending sexism in hacker culture: A work in progress.

For now I won’t go on any further, because I am a bit disillusioned. I actually thought after last summer that something might change and even ‘hackers’ (speaking in cliché) would grant more diverse people to join their ranks. And of course there are enough hackers who find all that awful too and who put a lot of effort into changing this, but they are clearly the minority. Interestingly some of the best efforts come out of male and hacker dominated contexts – they just seem to be ignored again by the majority of these context’s members. For example Anatol Stefanowitch gave a great talk (in German) on speech and platform neutrality at the last openmind conference – #om12. In this talk he explained very clearly from a linguist perspective how sexism, racism, classism and other forms of discrimination work in speech and what to do against them. If you understand German, give it a try, it is a very clear presentation and funny in it’s own way: Sprache und Plattformneutralität. So, not all Pirates seem to think they are post-gender (confer my article “No, we are not post-gender!” from May 2012).

This summer so far, there was a whole lotta fuzz about sexism on the web and in hacker spaces. And that is a good thing, because still too many people believe this is just a minor issue and that we just shouldn’t be so sensitive about that. Well, actually, that is exactly the kind of structural sexism that allows for all those sexist creeps to go around and harass as they like – and this is not only on the web. The same thing can be said of our very own face-to-face relations. If you are in computer science and want to talk about sexism, then you usually get weird looks. Only if you are in the lucky situation to find some critical minds with whom you might converse about such topics you will have at least the chance to feel not at all alone on these grounds. Well, but why talking about sexism? We are anyways against it, aren’t we? This is the common assumption (not only in computer science contexts) which is the basis for an atmosphere that breeds sexist trolls In fact we could much better call many online contexts (sexist) trollospheres, because sad as is it, it seems rather normal that (sexist) trolls thrive away in many communicative online spaces without much consequence. This doesn’t mean that being ignorant about sexism directly produces sexist trolls and behavior. But it produces a (discursive) culture in which it is just ok to throw around some sexist jokes and the like. It is deemed “normal” then, and only if somebody really exaggerates (as if single sexist jokes would not be enough to insult people and drive them away), then some critical comments follow even by those otherwise ignorant of most sexism. It is also rather common then for these commentators to assume that this is only some kind of weird individual case. But well, let me tell you what happened so far.

Recently there was a lot of widely distributed talk about sexism on the web. Partly this was due to the great achievements of Anita Sarkeesian, who facilitates the wonderful feminist pop culture media critique blog at feministfrequencies.com. Last year, on this platform, she provided her widely received series of short videos under the title Tropes vs. Women, a series that “explores the reoccurring stories, themes and representations of women in Hollywood films and TV”. This year she planned on doing another series to “explore five common and recurring stereotypes of female characters in video games”. For that she started a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter under the title Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, to get a little funding for it. Although the initial goal was just 6.000 US-$, in the end a fascinating 158.922 US-$ were pledged. Well, so far so good. At the same time a load of harassment and online-mobbing against Sarkeesian started. The great thing she then did do was to document this publicly right from the start. This way a whole lot of media coverage set in and sexism on the web suddenly was a serious topic – for it has been so often neglected by online communities as individual problems that are not worthy public debate. Those who bring up critiques on sexist behaviour are usually silenced or discounted as oversensitive political agitators. Sarkeesian fortunately was experienced enough to put up with that, so instead of being silenced she made all the harassment public:

“Here is a very small sample of the harassment I deal with for daring to criticize sexism in video games. Keep in mind that all this is in response to my Kickstarter project for a video series called Tropes vs. Women in Video Games (which I have not even made yet). These are the types of silencing tactics often used against women on the internet who dare to speak up. But don’t worry it won’t stop me!”

This of course led to more harassment. But it also probably led to more backers for her project, which is a great side effect. To make money of all those sexist trolls, if you cannot get rid of them is after all not such a bad strategy, as the platform hatr.org already showed for critical german speaking online contexts. Well, now, I will not post all the articles Anita Sarkeesian put out on this issue, because it might be hard to go through all those violent examples, which she made transparent on her blog. If you are interested go to her website and just scroll down (she also put some trigger warnings there, where it starts to get awful, in case you are unsure if you want to take that in). Another recent description of sexism and outright sexual harassment in ICT-related communities then was described by Valerie Aurora, from the Ada Initiative. She worked by the way also on the HOWTO Encourage Women in Linux guide, on which we reported in a recent blog post on the notion of post-gender. But what she recently reported on was the outrageous examples of sexual harassment at the DEFCON conferences, the largest and most famous hacker conference worldwide. In her post at the blog of the Ada Initiativ on DEFCON: Why conference harassment matters, she presents her very interesting insights into the development of the DEFCON conferences and the problems with stereotypical male spaces, sexism and sexual harassment at such places. Just a few days ago then Bruce Schneier, well-known security guru, wrote a short blog entry on this issue to highlight this as a problem that should not be done away with easily. So, hopefully more people, especially males start to feel responsible too and this will lead to further debates and critical action to fight sexism and sexual harassment everywhere, but also especially in our technophile male-dominated domains around computer science and ICT.

It is shocking how common sexism is. At least now it is increasingly documented and taken up for debate. Today is the last day to check out the Humble Indie Bundle V for a solidarity prize. In general we suggest that supporting of independent, autonomous and/or collective producers is the way to go – if we are earnestly looking for a way out of the constant circle of capitalist crisis. So, in gaming too, support independent game producers and pay what you want/can. It’s a great initiative. And besides, the games are great too, because they often introduce novel gameplay and interesting, funny and witty characters and stories.

Vorratsdatenspeicherung, VPN-Workshop & mehr im tech:babbel café

Morgen, am Di., 12. Juni 2012 um 17.00 Uhr gibt es in der Wipplingerstraße 23 ein tech:babbel café wo unter anderem folgende Fragen diskutiert werden können: Vorratsdatenspeicherung und wie diese Pauschal-Überwachung umgehen? Was bringen die neuen Versionen von den verschiedenen Linux Betriebssystemen? Welches Potential aber auch welche Risiken bringen Smartphones wie z.B. Android Geräten mit sich?

Am Do., 21. Juni 2012 gibts dort dann auch um 17.30 Uhr einen VPN-Workshop, um sich eine konkrete Praxis anzueignen, wie die Vorratsdatenspeicherung umgangen werden kann.

Kurze Info zu tech:babbel allgemein:

tech:babbel will einen Rahmen zur Verfügung stellen, um über Technik in einem politischen Kontext zu diskutieren, mit Technik zu spielen und die Freude am herumbasteln zu entdecken. Dabei legen wir Wert auf ein Setting ohne (Technik-)Gemackere, wo Raum für Fragen und Austausch ist. tech:babbel ist ein kleines aber feines Grüppchen aus Technik interessierten Menschen, die beim herumbasteln nicht auf queer-feministische / feministische Ansprüche verzichten wollen.

Organisert werden unregelmässige t:b-Cafés, Diskussionen und Workshops. Manche open 4 allgenders und manche F*L*I*T only. Bei uns muss eins kein_e Super-Nerd_in oder “Expert_in” sein – Interesse und Spaß an der Materie reicht vollkommen aus! Falls du dich beteiligen magst, dann komm einfach vorbei.

Macht Gender Unterschied in der Informatik?

Am Mittwoch, 6. Juni 2012 um 18.30 Uhr wird Cecile K. M. Crutzen im Hörsaal 1 des NIG einen Vortrag zum Thema “Macht Gender Unterschied in der Informatik?” halten. In ihrem Vortrag wird es dabei weniger um quantative Betrachtungen und Gleichstellungsfragen gehen, als vielmehr um die unmittelbaren Methoden in der Informatik. Bei genauerer Betrachtung stellt sich heraus, dass auch hier ein gender bias herrscht, der die Informatik zu einer Disziplin macht, die den Menschen nicht gerecht wird.

Dass Cecile Crutzen, die selbst aus der Informatik kommt, in diesem Semester Gastprofessorin an der Uni Wien ist erfährt mensch als Informatik-Student*in kaum. Sie ist dies zudem am Institut für Politikwissenschaften, weil es leider nach wir vor keine “kritischen offenen Räumen innerhalb der Informatik” gibt. Genau diese allerdings zu schaffen ist uns jedoch ein Anliegen, also Räume in denen “die Informatik und ihr Handeln selbst Thema sein kann” (aus der Ankündigung).

Insofern möchten wir alle Informatik-Student*innen, denen eine soziale und den Menschen gerechte Informatik am Herzen liegt zum Vortrag von Cecile Crutzen einladen. Die volle Einladung inklusive Ankündigungstext findest du auf der Seite des Referats Genderforschung.

Passend zum Thema, wenn auch nun eher auf struktureller Ebene ansetzend, haben wir selbst kürzlich einen kurzen Artikel mit dem Titel “No, we are not post-gender!” in hier im Blog veröffentlicht.
