The Graduate School at IST Austria is looking for bright students to join us. We invite applicants with bachelor’s or master’s degrees (or equivalent) from all disciplines of the natural sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, and any interdisciplinary areas, who are committed to pursue their scientific career in an international research environment are invited to apply. We are particularly looking for students with an interest in interdisciplinary work.

The PhD program combines advanced coursework and research, for a total duration of 4-5 years. The program starts with coursework and rotations, followed by a specific project of one’s choice. Applicants do not need to identify their supervisor from the start. Admitted students have up to a year to identify their supervisor.

For students starting in September 2012 the deadline for application will be January 15th, 2012. All applications must be received on-line through a web site available during the application period (mid-November to January 15).

The language of the Graduate School is English. All PhD students are admitted in a competitive selection process, once a year, and receive an internationally attractive salary for the duration of the PhD program. IST Austria does not charge tuition or fees, and we do not have an age limit. Applicants do not need to identify their supervisor from the start. Admitted students have up to a year to identify their supervisor.

All participants are selected in an annual, institute-wide admissions process according to their research potential.

IAESTE – by Students – for Students

Founded in 1365, the University of Vienna is among the oldest
universities in Europe and is the largest teaching and research
institution in Austria. In the past, the Nobel Prize has been awarded
to nine scientists that are linked to the University of Vienna through
either teaching or research.

The Research Group Scientific Computing focuses on research in
programming paradigms, languages, compilers and software
infrastructures for scientific computing to support users in the
process of solving increasingly complex compute- and data-intensive
problems in science and engineering on high-end parallel and
distributed computing platforms. The group is involved in several
national and international research projects in this area. The working
language of the research group and the PhD program is English.

Applicants, preferably with background in parallel computing, are
expected to have research interest in one or more of the following
topics:
– Programming models and languages for parallel architectures
– Compilers and runtime systems
– APIs and development tools for GPU-based architectures
– Performance modeling, optimization, and auto-tuning

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (or equivalent) in computer
science or other related areas. Programming skills in C/C++ and/or
Java are required. Fluency in English (written and spoken) and
interest in writing up and presenting research results completes the
applicant’s profile.

the name of at least one reference that may be contacted for
additional information.
